Where To Find Hogfish

Hogfish alwys provide great action for tampa Bay anglers especially wwhen in 50 feet of water along the rocky ledges along the Tampa Bay area coastline. Many locals call the hogfish a “hog snapper” because their features really resemble the grey snapper or mangrove snapper here in Florida. Hogfish also live in both the Atlantic and Gulf waters surrounding the Florida Keys. They like to root around in the sandy bottom surrounding coral patches, wrecks and exposed rock areas.

Most Hogfissh in Tampa reach a maximum of 36 inches in length and about 24 pounds. Some hogfish have been reported to live up to 11 years but most live to around 6-10 years.

Hogfish Tackle and Bait

Most of the time when people catch hogfish, they accidentally catch them, but with the right strategy and target, you can catch a myriad of them using Captain Tom Pooler’s techniques. Light tackle is best used for hogfish which is similar tackle to what you would use for grey snapper. You can use 10-12 lp gear with 10-12 lb test line along with flourocarbon leaders.
