Characteristics Of Wahoo
A long slender fish with a zebra pattern of white and deep blue stripes on its body – mouth is slim with extremely sharp teeth for catching prey. Wahoo charter fishing in Tampa Bay is very fun and known for their long and fast runs. These darty fish are said to be one of the fastest fish in the entire gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay. Extra caution and care should be taken when a Wahoo is aboard your boat because of the sharp teeth. Captain Tom Pooler will guide you on the fishing charter about what to do before reeling in a Wahoo.
Where To Find Wahoo
When charter fishing for Wahoo around Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, we like to catch these fish by trolling or drift fishing.
Wahoo Dimensions | Size And Weight
The more common Wahoo range in size from 10pounds to about 50 pounds and can grow to 80-90 pounds. The maximum they will grow will be about 50pounds but the world record for wahoo is 184 pounds and the Florida record is 139 pounds. Catching a wahoo isn’t very common but a true treat when you do. There are several other types of game fish you might catch when trolling for Wahoo including dolphin, barracuda, and tuna. These wahoo fish are also considered a trophy fish in that many fisherman like to mount their prized fish on the wall.
The Wahoo “Fight”
Most wahoo love to put up a fight and provide a long run most of the time. Wahoo react a little bit differently when hooked in that they shake their heads violently to get loose. Its important to have your hook sunk in deep to make sure you can reel it in during this once in a lifetime fight.

Wahoo Tackle and Bait
Most of the time when we hook wahooo we are using heavier tackle much like that in bill fishing. The best choice to use, however,is to use a 30lb test line with medium sized ocean trolling outfits. There are times that we have been on a charter fishing adventure and caught wahoo by deepjigging or ocean casting with spinning tackle. captain Tom likes to use a feathered trolling lure rigged with small bait fish or bonito strips.
