Types Of Triggerfish:
Balistes capriscus – Grey Triggerfish
Characteristics Of The Triggerfish
There are about 40 different species of trigger fish in the ocean. Triggerfish have an oval shaped, highly compressed body. The head is large, terminating in a small but strong- jawed mouth with teeth adapted for crushing shells. The eyes are small, set far back from the mouth, at the top of the head. when predators approach, the triggerfish uses its two dorsal spines to deliver a blow. The first spine of the triggerfish is locked in place by the second spine in which the first can oly be unlocked by the second using a trigger action.
Where To Find Triggerfish
You can find masses of triggerfish in the gulf of Mexico along the reefs and wrecks.
Triggerfish Dimensions | Size And Weight
Grey triggerfish in the Florida state are regulated as follows: 12-14 inches fork length, 10 fish recreational fish limit.
The Triggerfish “Fight”
The triggerfish is a feisty one in that many anglers get frustrated when fishing snapper because the trigger fish will come and steal the bait. They like to come in for a quick strike but when caught they will put up a fight in a jerking back and forth motion. It is important to get the hook set in early and shallow as they have bony mouth and teeth and will get away easily if not set.
Triggerfish Technique
Triggerfish will eat just about anything you out on your hook so we like to use squid during bottom fishing or drift fishing. Triggerfish are also in the same habitats of red snapper and grouper so you will be competing with those larger fish as well.
Triggerfish Tackle and Bait
Catching triggerfish is pretty easy with little patience and a sharp small hook. Make sure not to jerk your line to sink in the hook but rather use a continuous slow and steady reel in. You will catch twice as many fish if you use this technique rather than trying to use a traditional hook set.
